How Shopify fees work
Shopify is your own storefront, not a marketplace, so there is no commission when you use Shopify Payments. You pay a credit-card processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per online order on the Basic plan (lower on higher plans), plus your monthly subscription. Using a third-party gateway adds a 2% transaction fee.
- Payment processing: 2.9% + $0.30 per online transaction on Basic with Shopify Payments (2.7% on Shopify, 2.5% on Advanced).
- No commission: Shopify takes no per-sale commission when you use Shopify Payments.
- Third-party gateways: using an external processor adds a 2% Shopify transaction fee on top.
- Subscription: a monthly plan fee (for example $39/month on Basic) applies regardless of sales.

Price every Shopify flip for profit
Knowing the fees is only half the math. To actually profit, price from real sold comps, subtract these fees and your shipping, and hold a minimum margin. Our profit margin guide walks through it, and the what-is-it-worth guide shows how to find an item’s real value before you buy. Cluzy does both in one scan: it pulls live sold prices and nets out fees so you know your profit on Shopify in seconds.
Shopify fees FAQ
How much does Shopify take per sale?
With Shopify Payments on the Basic plan, Shopify takes 2.9% + $0.30 per online order and no commission. On a $50 sale that is about $1.75, leaving roughly $48.25 before your product cost and shipping. A monthly subscription applies separately.
Does Shopify charge transaction fees?
Only if you do not use Shopify Payments. Using a third-party payment gateway adds a 2% Shopify transaction fee per order on top of that gateway's own processing fee. With Shopify Payments there is no extra transaction fee.
Is Shopify cheaper than a marketplace?
Per transaction, usually yes, since you avoid marketplace commissions of 10% to 20%. But you pay a monthly subscription and must drive your own traffic, so it suits sellers with steady volume and their own audience.
