Photo metadata FAQ
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No — and for this tool that matters doubly. Both the metadata scan and the cleaning run entirely in your browser. A tool that uploads your photos to strip their location data would be missing its own point.
What exactly is EXIF data?
A hidden block your camera writes inside every photo file: GPS coordinates, the exact second it was taken, camera or phone model, sometimes the lens serial number and editing software. It travels with the file — invisible in the picture, readable by anyone with a viewer like the one above.
Does removing metadata reduce photo quality?
Imperceptibly, if at all. Cleaning re-draws the photo onto a fresh canvas — PNG comes out pixel-identical (lossless), JPEG is re-encoded at 95%, visually indistinguishable from the original. Dimensions never change.
Don't eBay and Instagram strip EXIF anyway?
The big marketplaces and social networks do strip metadata from publicly displayed photos. The risk lives everywhere else: email attachments, text messages, AirDrop, Google Drive and Dropbox links, and your own website all pass the original file through untouched — GPS included.
How can I verify a photo is actually clean?
Drop the cleaned file right back into this tool. The scanner will report no readable metadata — the same check anyone else could run on it.
Why does it say "no readable metadata found" on some photos?
Screenshots, images saved from apps, and photos already processed by a platform usually have their metadata stripped at the source. Nothing to remove is a good result.
Does it remove copyright and credit info too?
Yes — the re-encode removes everything, including IPTC copyright fields. If you deliberately embed attribution in your files, keep your originals and clean only the copies you share.
Does it work offline?
