Stacked discounts never add up — literally

“30% off, plus an extra 20% off clearance” is not 50% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: $100 → $70 after 30% → $56 after the extra 20%. Total: 44% off. The gap grows with bigger numbers — 50% plus an extra 50% is 75% off, not free. When a sign stacks percentages, run it through the calculator’s extra-discount field before you get attached to the deal.

Discount math for thrifters and resellers

Thrift stores run constant rotating sales — weekly color tags at 50% off, senior and student days, fill-a-bag events. The discount decides your cost, but the flip decides your profit: a $12 jacket at 50% off costs $6, and if it sells for $45 on eBay, the discount just doubled your margin. Check what you’ll actually keep after selling fees with the eBay fee calculator or Poshmark fee calculator, and let the Cluzy app pull real sold prices while you’re still holding the item.

Percent-off FAQ

How do I calculate percent off in my head?

Anchor on 10%: move the decimal one place left. $42 → 10% is $4.20. From there, 20% is double that ($8.40), 5% is half ($2.10), and 25% is a quarter of the price. For 70% off, flip it around: you pay 30%, so multiply the price by 3 and move the decimal — $42 at 70% off is $12.60.

Is 30% off plus an extra 20% off the same as 50% off?

No — and stores count on people assuming it is. The extra discount applies to the already-reduced price: $100 at 30% off is $70, and 20% off $70 is $56. That's 44% off in total, not 50%. The calculator's "extra discount" field stacks it the way the register actually will.

What is 25% off $80?

$60. Take a quarter of $80 ($20) and subtract it. The same logic scales: 25% off anything is the price minus a quarter of itself.

How do I find out what percent off a sale price is?

Divide the sale price by the original price, subtract from 1, and multiply by 100. $60 from $80 is 1 − 0.75 = 25% off. Or switch this calculator to "What % off is it?" mode and let it do the division.

Is sales tax charged on the original or the discounted price?

In the US, tax applies to what you actually pay — the discounted price — for store discounts and coupons the retailer funds. The calculator adds your tax rate to the final discounted amount so the number matches your receipt.

Is a bigger percent off always a better deal?

Not if you resell. 70% off something worth nothing is still nothing. The number that matters at the thrift rack is the gap between the discounted price and what the item actually sells for — that's the exact math the Cluzy app does when you scan an item.

What do the color tags at thrift stores mean?

Most large thrift chains rotate a weekly color: one tag color is 50% off (sometimes 25% for a second color), and the colors cycle so everything eventually goes on sale. Ask at the register which color is on sale that week, then use the calculator to see your real cost before tax.

Does this calculator work offline?

Yes. It's pure arithmetic in your browser — no server involved. Load the page once and it keeps working without a connection.
