Why resellers watermark their photos
Good listing photos get stolen constantly: scammers lift them to run fake listings on other platforms, and drop-shippers repost entire closets. A watermark does two jobs. Tiled across the photo, it makes the image worthless to a thief — they can’t sell “their” jacket with your name across it. In a corner, it’s marketing: when your photo travels on social media, your @handle travels with it, and buyers can find their way back to your closet.
Where watermarks are welcome — and where they aren’t
One rule matters before anything else: check the platform.
| Platform | Watermarks | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| eBay | Not allowed | Current picture policy prohibits watermarks on listing photos |
| Poshmark | Allowed | Closet-name watermarks on covershots are common practice |
| Depop | Allowed | Small handles are widespread; keep them off the item itself |
| Mercari | Allowed | Fine in moderation; keep the item clearly visible |
| Instagram / TikTok | Your call | A small corner handle travels with reposted content |
Getting the watermark right
- Opacity40-60%. Visible enough to matter, transparent enough to keep the photo sellable.
- PlacementCorner for branding, tiled for protection. Never across the item's key details — buyers need to see condition.
- ContentYour @username beats a logo for resellers — it's readable at any size and tells people where to buy.
- ConsistencySame corner, same size, every photo. Batch mode applies one setting to the whole set for exactly this reason.
Watermark FAQ
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. Watermarking happens on your device with the Canvas API built into your browser — load the page once and it works offline. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged.
What opacity should a watermark be?
40-60% is the sweet spot: clearly visible without wrecking the photo. Below 30% it's easy to clone-stamp out; at 100% it dominates the image. Turn on the shadow option for white text on bright photos — it keeps the mark readable on any background.
Corner watermark or tiled all over?
Corner is branding: subtle, professional, easy on the eyes — right for social posts and portfolio shots. Tiled is protection: a diagonal repeat across the whole photo is genuinely hard to remove, which is what you want when photo thieves are reposting your listings to run scams.
Does a watermark actually stop photo theft?
It deters and it proves. A tiled watermark makes your photo useless for scam listings — thieves move on to unmarked photos. And if someone does repost your work, the mark is instant, visible proof of ownership for a takedown report. It won't stop a determined editor with time to burn, but it makes you the hardest target on the page.
Do marketplaces allow watermarked photos?
Know the rules before you upload: eBay does not allow watermarks on listing photos under its current picture requirements. Poshmark, Depop, and Mercari allow them, and many top sellers watermark their covershots with their closet name. For social media, it's your call — a small corner handle is standard practice.
Should I use text or my logo?
Text is usually better for resellers: your @username or closet name tells people where to find you even when the photo travels. Use a logo when you have one with a transparent PNG background — it composites cleanly at any size.
Will the photo format change?
PNG stays PNG (transparency preserved); everything else exports as high-quality JPEG at 92%. Dimensions never change — only the watermark is added.
Can I watermark many photos at once?
Yes — up to 40 in one batch, with the same watermark applied consistently to each, then a single ZIP download. The live preview shows your first photo so you can dial in the look before applying it everywhere.
